Yankee Clippers Shearing

wool sheep shearer

Since 2008 Colin has been working to become a professional shearer. He sheared his first sheep at age 14 and has been captivated ever since. After a heartfelt attempt to pursue a career in the dairy industry, Colin came to realize his true passion was still in shearing. In the spring of 2017 Siri began picking up a handful of flocks as she noticed a need for more shearers in the area. It took a full season before she was wholly committed to becoming a skilled shearer but she’s never looked back. With our combined experience and love for the craft, there’s nothing else we’d rather be doing.

As shepherds ourselves, we understand the concerns that can come along with shearing day. We maintain animal comfort and a quality clip as our top priorities. Our goal is to leave sheep and shepherd happier than when we showed up. We’ve put together some good practices you can follow for a successful shearing.

 Odds and Ends

How far will you travel?

All the way to Wisconsin! We currently have regular runs to western New York, Illinois, and Wisconsin. We jump around Eastern New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island all the time. If you’re outside of New England, contact us early and we’ll be more than happy to fit you in on one of our trips.

Which species do you shear?

While our specialty is sheep we do a number of Angora goats each year as well. If you have only goats or goats along with sheep please let us know in advance.

How much will it cost me?

Our pricing is based on flock size and how far we have to travel. Contact us and let us know how many sheep you have and where you’re located for a quote. Although it won’t affect price, it’s always nice to have an idea of what breed you have as well!

When should I contact you to schedule shearing?

The earlier you reach out to us, the better chance we have to pick a date that works for everyone. We typically start setting spring shearing dates in January. It’s best to have a plan with us before the hottest days of summer roll in! By that time of the year we are often booked weeks out and our phones are ringing off the hook.

I’m not sure when’s the best time for my sheep to be shorn. Can you help?

Absolutely! Give us a call or send a message and let us know about your sheep. Every breed and management system have different needs that we can help you through. With that, some sheep do benefit from being shorn twice per year so we have a batch of clients for fall shearing as well.

Any other questions? Let’s talk!
